“Medicare Shakeup: The Must-Know Changes That Could Impact Your Health!”

As we get older, change can feel a little more unsettling—especially when it comes to something as important as Medicare. Unfortunately, this year, Medicare is going through some significant changes, particularly affecting those of you on Medicare Advantage plans. These changes might feel confusing and disruptive.

In this video, I’ll break down what’s happening, when the changes will take effect, and most importantly, how you can be prepared.

When Will These Changes Happen? Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Part C plans, operate on a calendar-year basis. You’ll be affected by these changes starting January 1 of the next year, but the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)—the time to make changes—runs from October 15 to December 7. Any changes you make during this period will go into effect on January 1 of the following year, so it’s critical to review your options during this time.

What to Expect: You’ll start seeing ads and hearing from agents about these upcoming changes. Some of the information may be useful, but be cautious—many are just trying to sell you a new plan. The most important document to look out for is your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which will detail the changes to your plan for the coming year. If you don’t receive this by mid-October, contact your insurance provider.

Why Is This Happening? There are a few key reasons behind these disruptions:

  1. Adjustments in Funding: Medicare Advantage plans received less funding than anticipated, which will impact the benefits they offer.
  2. Growing Health Needs: As more people stay on Medicare Advantage and age, insurance companies are facing increased healthcare costs, which could lead to plan changes or higher out-of-pocket expenses.
  3. Pre-Authorization Issues: Medicare Advantage plans often require pre-authorization for services. More scrutiny around this process may lead to changes in how your care is approved or denied.
  4. Fewer Plan Perks: Many Medicare Advantage plans offer perks like dental, vision, and gym memberships. However, these perks may be reduced as insurers adjust their offerings.

What You Can Do:

  1. Review Your ANOC: Make sure to thoroughly read your Annual Notice of Change to understand any changes in premiums, deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket costs for the next year.
  2. Switch Plans if Necessary: If your current plan no longer meets your needs, you can switch during the AEP. You’ll want to make sure the new plan covers everything you need and is available in your area.
  3. Use Medicare Open Enrollment: If you switch plans but realize after January 1 that the new plan isn’t right for you, there’s a second chance. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, from January 1 to March 31, allows you to switch plans again.
  4. Return to Original Medicare: If you’re tired of Medicare Advantage plans altogether, you have the option to switch back to Original Medicare and get a supplemental plan, though this may require medical underwriting depending on where you live.
