How To Protect Yourself from the Latest Scams and Frauds
Hello and welcome to this video about protecting yourself from the latest scams and frauds. In today’s digital age, cybercrime is a growing threat and it’s essential to be aware of these scams so you can stay protected.
Small business owner fell victim to a sophisticated cybercrime where the criminals used technology to convince him they were from the Chase fraud department and stole over $120,000 in a wire transfer scam. The scammers even tricked a Chase employee by impersonating the account holder. Cybersecurity experts are warning of an uptick in these types of “phishing-as-a-service” kits that are driving these sophisticated multipronged attacks. The threat is expected to only get worse this year. Unfortunately, these scams exploit regulatory loopholes and banks are not always required to repay the stolen funds.
The account holder was convinced by the criminals because they masked their phone number to match his bank’s customer service and sent him a secured link via text message. The link and website appeared to be identical to his bank’s banking app, so he logged in without realizing he was not speaking to a legitimate bank’s representative.
My best advice to protect yourself is to hang up the phone if you receive a call from your bank asking for information. If you receive a call, text, or email claiming to be from your bank, it’s best to hang up and call the bank back yourself using a number you know to be real. Cybercriminals have the ability to spoof caller ID and may use stolen personal information to trick you into handing over money.
In conclusion, be aware of these scams and protect yourself by hanging up the phone if you receive a suspicious call from your bank. Stay vigilant and stay protected.
