    I thought this was a great book with very helpful illustrations. The insights and being able to clearly explain a rather complicated system (parasympathetic, etc.) is one of the strengths of the book. I really liked all of the exercises and that the author put the exercises in context of the material presented in that chapter. The somatic therapy for beginner videos is definitely an impressive way to real ground the theoretical information with practicality. I learned a lot from this book, and think it is a great resource.

    I liked this book and was attracted to it because I had never heard of the vagus nerve before. When I read that the vagus nerve plays a significant role in managing stress and maintaining balance, I wanted to learn more. The author states that the vagus nerve is the center of the command for controlling our body’s relaxation responses. The author offers a clear definition and explains the function of the vagus nerve effectively. She does an excellent job summarizing how this nerve helps lower our heart rate and calms our bodies in times of stress. The author clearly shows the benefits of having a well-functioning vagus nerve. With a well-functioning vagus nerve, we can control or at least influence our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. This book includes exercises and daily routines for properly functioning the vagus nerve. The author addresses how stimulating the vagus nerve can enrich our lives. All along the way, the author used an empathetic tone. This book is well put together and comprehensive about a much-needed topic. I learned how a healthy vagus nerve could positively affect our lives.

    Our gut is basically another brain – SO much happens there besides just digestion. Or, it should if it is functioning properly – from sending signals that manage hunger, to producing various enzymes and hormones (in fact, more hormones are secreted from the gut than any other organ), to influencing how you FEEL and FUNCTION. This book really focuses on how to optimize this through stimulating your vagus nerve with easy breathing exercises. Frankly, just taking the time to do the exercises is helpful because it’s basic mindfulness and breathing – but they do more than reset you mentally in a very stressful world.
